Kids Out Day 2015 at W5

KidsOut2015The Club were delighted to take the children of Mitchell House School to visit the W5 science and discovery centre at the Odyssey complex for the 2015 'Kids Out Day' - an event carried out by a large number of the Rotary Clubs throughout UK and Ireland on the same day – taking kids with learning or physical difficulties to some fun place for the day - and a great day out was had by all!

We have been participating in this day out for 7 years and have taken the pupils of Mitchell House School out for the day to the Portaferry Aquarium, Castle Espie, the Zoo and Streamvale Open Farm, Dundonald and the Ulster Museum.

KidsOut2015 3Having travelled by bus, the 20 children and 8 adult helpers were met by President Ronnie McLean, Immediate Past President Ken Morrison, Past President Brian Ferguson, Rtns Mark Davidson and John McCleery and, of course, organiser Past President Brian Clements and the first stop was a workshop on 'Forces' where the children in a practical way explored how forces such as push/pull and gravity can affect movement. They really loved it and even built their own rocket.

They then explored the Discovery Play Area where they could interact with a vast array of exhibits including water, lasers, construction and shops but the real 'hit' was the Fiat 500 which had no doors but was fully working – it even started! After lunch at Pizza Express they took their leave thanking the Club for organising a most enjoyable day out. We were able to assure them the pleasure was all ours!

KidsOut2015 4Organiser PP Brian Clements notes that it was wonderful to see this wonderful group of children, so quick witted and full of fun, interacting so well. All really enjoyed it and found it really rewarding.

The Club thanks all those members who accompanied the kids to W5 or otherwise helped to make it the success it was.
