World Polio Day 2016

Polio Day16This World Polio Day, there is much to celebrate. Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative nearly 30 years ago, the incidence of polio – a vaccine preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today - has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent from about 350,000 cases a year and this year to date, with only 27 having been diagnosed, has seen fewer children paralysed by polio than ever before.

In the past three decades, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative has made incredible progress towards ending this disease forever and Rotary has contributed more than US$1.6 billion. To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, more funds are still urgently needed.

Without full funding and political commitment, this paralysing disease could return to previously polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk. Rotary won't give up until we reach our goal of a polio free world.
