Rotary Club of Belfast

USA Scholar Shaley Moore

ShaleyMoore2Guest speaker USA Scholar Shaley Moore gave a most accomplished address to the Club on herself and her studies Monday 14 August. She advised that she is here through the Rotary District 6110 Kirchner Scholarship studying for a Master's degree in International Peace and Reconciliation at Magee College. She noted that she hailed from the mid-west Webb City, Missouri - a small town of 10,000 people and is sponsored by Webb City-Carl Junction Rotary Club and hosted by the Rotary Club of Londonderry.

She indicated that while at the State University of Springfield, Missouri studying interpersonal communications she worked as a resident student helping students integrate into university life, she first became interested in conflict resolution and wondered how to apply it in her future. She stayed at University to do a Masters in Communication and as a teaching assistant in Public Speaking fell in love with the teaching profession and is even now teaching online for the University at home. Her subsequent experience in conflict resolution in the community, peer guidance and coaching led her to apply for the Ulster University Course (having been recommended by her tutor). She advised that she has been highly impressed and although she finished her course in May she has been interning in Mediation NI in Belfast setting up a curriculum on teaching skills and a course for the autumn. She will be finishing her dissertation looking at how interpersonal relationships shape the peace processes and communities, specifically political leadership, on August 25.

She emphasised that Rotary had been part of her life since a baby and it was nice to come and be surrounded by Rotarians; she had attended the District conference and Londonderry Club’s programmes and it has been a great experience. She found the Programme very insightful and is hoping to get a job in that field in the community sector, mediation or perhaps Human Resources but would like to stay in Belfast a bit longer! She revealed that she is developing a course on International Conflict Resolution to take back home.
