Rotary Summer Camp 2017 Report

Mother Sarah And PresRosemary

The Club were delighted to welcome to the Club meeting Monday 23 October guest speaker Sarah Hand and her mother. An A-Level student at Victoria College, Belfast, Sarah gave an interesting talk on her experiences at the recent Rotary Summer Camp held at Karlshann, Sweden. Thanking Rotary for the wonderful opportunity, she indicated that this was the 20th anniversary of the Camp and that she had thoroughly enjoyed what was an action packed 10 days.

She explained that she had been hosted by the Lund family and had learnt a lot about Swedish culture and that in turn she had explained to them a little about NI culture, even cooking them a shepherd’s pie!

SarahsAddress2Sarah indicated that this was her first time away from home and she had enjoyed the experience particularly mixing with young people from many countries in Europe (12 other nationalities were present from all over Europe) and taking the opportunity to learn some Swedish; Sarah confirmed that she had been the only native English speaker, though everyone she met spoke good English. Another first for Sarah was the opportunity, which she took, to be interviewed by Swedish TV.

QuestionTimeShe advised that she had matured and made many new friends - indeed she has remained in touch with everyone on the trip along with her host family.

Sarah concluded by advising that she plans to study medicine at University, paid tribute to her host family and thanked Rotary for the opportunity to attend the camp.

Her very well received address prompted several questions and in answer to one on the challenges of team work she mentioned that she was able to use her skills as an instructor while sailing with her friends during the camp and it is her aim to go back in two years’ time as an instructor.
