A Career in Law

KenEileenandPresMarkEileen Ewing, President of the Law Society, Monday 20 August, gave an excellent, enlightening and comprehensive talk on her career which was very well received by the very attentive audience. She gave a personal perspective on how she joined without a law degree as a legal secretary and came up through the ranks to a paralegal role, qualified as a solicitor through the apprenticeship scheme and progressed through the Court system eventually ending up as President of the Law Society in NI. She noted that her main focus in recent years has been on family law referring to particular work on Pre-Nuptial contracts and the promotion of a Collaborative approach in dealing with family disputes. She revealed she was privileged to be President of the NI Law Society, in a year when women were also holding presidential office in England and Wales and Scotland, and highlighted the work of colleagues who are leading names in International Legal bodies. She concluded that the profession as a whole in the Province – 2,000 lawyers in NI Law Society - was making a big impression internationally being well regarded for the quality and outcomes of their work and ensuring it was a good place for lawyers and business.
