ShelterBox Indonesia Appeal Club Response

Indonesia Sulawesi 18The Club is delighted to report that £4,713 has been donated by members to ShelterBox’s special appeal for support to deploy emergency aid for the people of Sulawesi Island in Indonesia which President Mark asked members to support. The Island suffered several earthquake strikes on 28 and 29 September, the strongest earthquake had a magnitude of 7.5 and triggered a tsunami that struck Palu Bay at a speed of 800 km/h with waves up to 6m. As of end October 2,077 people have been confirmed dead with 4,400 people injured and a further 1075 people still missing. 211,000 people have been displaced. The destruction of shelter is widespread and many houses have been partially submerged in the ground.

Indonesia aid Oct 18Right now, ShelterBox have a response team in Jakarta and Palu, working closely with “incredible” local Rotarians to help survivors of the earthquake and tsunami. They are coordinating with national and local government authorities to ensure they're providing the right items that affected families need, and to make sure they are reaching vulnerable families who would not get support otherwise. Distributions have begun in some remote villages outside of Palu city - 48 households have received aid so far. ShelterBox have created a package of aid for each family they will help in Sulawesi.
