Rotary Club of Belfast

Mitchell House School Thanks

MiriamGivesHistoryOfMHThank you Miriam Donnan, Headmistress, Mitchell House School for your great appreciation of the Club’s support and your inspirational address to the Club Monday 17 June about the history and work of the School, particularly the use of ICT for some quite disabled/challenged children between the ages of 3 and 19. Miriam noted that is a co-educational special school for children with physical disabilities as a primary need but now increasingly most of their students have associated learning needs as well. They have multi-disciplinary teams with teachers, classroom assistants, nurses and physios whom they rely on heavily to use special equipment with the children encouraging exercise and strengthening limbs. They have 4 facets: Child centred, teaching and Learning, leadership and management and Community and follow a curriculum adapted to meet individual need with special seating and desks depending on individual’s needs. She advised that they also have a rich programme of Shared Education with Ashfield Boys' High School as well as St Joseph’s Primary School, Ballyhackamore and St Joseph’s College, Ravenhill Road having a range of different activities and classes throughout the year which they find of great value.
