Rotary Club of Belfast

Handover 2020

HandoverThe Handover to President Ken took place during the virtual Club meeting Monday 29 June.

President Ken noted Immediate Past President (IPP) Karen had had a great year though sadly she had not been able to implement her plans for a strong finish during the last few months but faced with the Covid challenge in March had "zoomed in on us all"! He pointed out that she had put a huge amount of her valuable time into Rotary and, he believed, was the 1st President who was a practising solicitor and her experience will be invaluable going forward.

He stated that he was delighted to be taking on the role in the 110th year of the Club and revealed he had joined in the late 80's, also then a practising solicitor, and was the 4th Old Portorean to be President following in the footsteps of Harry Corscadden, Craig McClelland and Alastair Corscadden. He stressed that as Covid was posing health and economic challenges never was Rotary's motto 'Service above Self' more relevant and the Club would be increasing the local focus this year; he also congratulated Past President Alan and Rotaract on their latest initiative (see here)and he looked forward to being back in the Europa Hotel.

Karen FlowersIPP Karen noted at the meeting that she has been honoured to have been the Club's President revealing that it had been thanks to former member PP Ken Morrison that Cleaver Fulton Rankin had become Corporate Members during his Presidency. Although not knowing much about Rotary before joining she had been impressed by the 'hands on' approach of Rotarians and that this has continued is exemplified by the circulated Annual Report's details of the year (see here). She felt that the Club was well placed for next year and that it is a pity about the new 'normal'. She hoped there would be new members soon and extended thanks to the Service Chairs and Council members.
