Rotary members have spearheaded the fight against Polio since 1979 and Rotarians all over the world are making history this week by taking part in an initiative in honour of Rotary's 109th anniversary by donating the funds raised from a special meal for the fight against Polio and thus help eradicating it forever. Significantly, every $1 raised will become $3 by a generous donation from the Bill & Miranda Gates Foundation – huge supporters of Rotary's efforts. As a result every £3 raised will immunise 7 children against this crippling disease.

Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said: "I was delighted to be involved in the Rotary Club's breakfast morning, aimed at highlighting their campaign to eradicate Polio. The Rotary Club has been carrying out fantastic work around the world attempting to eliminate this harrowing disease. They have been hugely successful so far and with their continued drive and passion, I am confident they will reach their ultimate goal."

The Rotary Club of Belfast President Ken Morrison said: "The Rotary Club of Belfast is one of the highest Club contributors in the British Isles and is delighted to have hosted this event and particularly to have had the support of so many local companies and Rotary Clubs around Greater Belfast. Today will make a significant contribution in this Rotary week to help in the quest to finally eradicate Polio. The target is to rid the world of this horrible, incurable disease completely by 2018 - we are so close. More information on Rotary's efforts to eradicate Polio can be seen here.
