Polar Explorer
In a most interesting and well-illustrated address Monday 24 April Club Past President Mark Davidson highlighted his experience as a "polar explorer" in the Antarctic on his 2 week trip there in February this year. His extensively illustrated address particularly highlighted:
- the stunning beauty of the area with its spectacular scenery
- waters that can be rough or flat calm
- the strict procedures undertaken to protect its eco-system, such as hoovering and sanitising all personal belongings and equipment and providing special boots and coats that no particles are taken ashore and maintain strict walking areas
- whales are seen in abundance and
- inhabited only by explorers, Antarctica does not belong to any country and must be respected
PP Mark concluded it was “a jaw-droppingly beautiful place exuding calm and stillness leaving a feeling you can't quite believe where you are - its quite a treat"!
